Hang a batten board to prevent tile slippage a batten board helps you start your bottom most course or row of tiles.
If possible you should always use concrete board underlayments rather than plywood.

When installing over chipboard you need to install concrete board over the top of it before tile can be installed.
Mix up some thinset and apply it to the bottom of the concrete board.

To do so make sure all of the tiles are intact and secure.
If existing tiles are beyond repair remove the tile and install a piece of wallboard in its place.
For wall installations plywood is overkill beneath the concrete or fiber board which is designed in five eighths inch material for wall settings.
Wash the wall with tsp tri sodium phosphate or an ammonia based cleaner to remove any grease or oil.
Newer green chipboard is used to help with this but still isn t perfect.

If tiling on existing walls apply and smooth general patch to bring the surface into flatness compliance prior to tiling.
For shower walls and tub surrounds install wonderboard lite 1 4 backerboard.
Step 3 spread no sag mastic adhesive along the bottom of the wall with your notched adhesive trowel covering everything from the floor up past the horizontal line.
You can do this either by covering with a 10mm layer of weberfloor flex 6mm tile backer board or 15mm plywood.
